Zutari hereby gives notice in terms of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No.107 of 1998) (NEMA) that the City of Cape Town seek permission to conduct periodic repairs and maintenance work on the 810 mm bulk water pipeline within the Morkel’s Cottage area in Strand, Western Cape.
As the project entails maintenance-related activities, it does not trigger any listed activities under the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations, 2014, and will require an approval of a Maintenance Management Plan. In addition, the project requires General Authorisation in terms of the National Water Act, 1998 (Act No. 36 of 1998) (NWA).
The final Maintenance Management Plan (MMP) will be submitted to the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA&DP) for approval.
Zutari (Pty) Ltd has been appointed as an Independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) to compile the required MMP and apply for General Authorisation.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The City of Cape Town (CCT) intends to conduct periodic repairs and maintenance work on the 810 mm bulk water pipeline within the Morkel’s Cottage area in Strand, Western Cape Provincial Operations. The bulk (potable) water pipeline traverses several residential areas including Onverwacht, Rusthof, Forbes and Broadlands Village and a conservation area as demarcated by the CCT. The bulk water mains supply potable water to the CCT and connect the water treatment works, dams and other water sources and the CCT’s potable water reticulation system.
The project works would entail the excavation of the pipeline length in stages to caulk (i.e. seal) the joints on the 810mm potable water pipeline.
LOCATION
Morkel’s Cottage is an informal settlement located in Strand within the CCT boundaries. The bulk potable water pipeline traverses various properties in Onverwacht, Rusthof, Forbes and Broadlands Village and within a conservation area demarcated by the City of Cape Town.
