Zutari provided structural engineering services for the Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital, located in Bridge City, Durban. The project forms part of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health’s Hospital Revitalisation Programme, aimed at expanding and modernising healthcare infrastructure across the province.

The opportunity

The new hospital significantly enhances healthcare capacity in Durban North, addressing the needs of a growing population and offering specialist services to patients referred from regional facilities. The project presented an opportunity to integrate sustainable design principles into a high-functioning medical facility.

What we did

Zutari’s scope included structural engineering for the four-storey, 28,888 m² hospital, which adds 500 critical care beds to the region’s healthcare system. The building was designed for operational efficiency and sustainability, featuring:

  • Passive design principles that optimise natural light and orientation to reduce energy consumption

  • Energy-saving systems and water harvesting technologies

  • Environmentally friendly construction methods to minimise the carbon footprint

  • Rainwater harvesting tanks with a capacity of 635,000 litres for sanitation and irrigation

  • A central “hospital street” spine layout to reduce travel distances and improve response times within the facility

The outcome

The hospital’s design supports efficient movement, critical in emergency healthcare settings. The central spine layout enhances accessibility and operational flow, while sustainable features contribute to long-term environmental and economic benefits. The facility is a key milestone in the province’s commitment to improving public health infrastructure.
