Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital

Supporting Kwa-Zulu Natal's hospital revitalization programme

Zutari provided structural engineering services on the Dr. Pixley ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital, based in Bridge City, Durban, as part of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health’s Hospital Revitilsation Programme.

The new facility will significantly improve the province’s healthcare capacity, better serving the growing population of Durban North and providing much needed specialist health services to patients referred by regional healthcare facilities.

Designed for effective operation, the 4-storey building not only makes use of passive design principles that use orientation and natural light to save power, but is also equipped with energy saving and water harvesting technology.  A reduced carbon footprint was achieved through environmentally friendly construction.

Rainwater harvesting tanks store 635 000 litres of water for sanitation and irrigation purposes.
The 28 888m² facility adds 500 critical beds to better serve the province’s growing population.

In a hospital, the ability to move quickly and effectively is critical.  Dr. Pixley ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital is designed along a central spine, “hospital street”, which reduces travel – saving the time that saves lives.
