Automotive plant extension accommodates successful growth
Toyota Manufacturing SA required an extension to the existing warehousing for their chassis plant at the vehicle manufacturing facility in Prospecton, Durban. As part of the general growth in Toyota’s local production, an expansion of 30 m to the existing plant was needed as well as approximately 3,000 m² to accommodate a new production line.
Zutari was appointed as principal agent for the project and provided civil and structural engineering services, including project management, roads and stormwater design, the structural design of the subway and bridge structures, construction supervision, and contract management.
In addition to the plant extension, the project scope also included the construction of a new 1,000 m-long by 6 m-wide asphalt road to transport completed vehicles from the assembly halls to the distribution centre, namely Motorvia Road. The road features a grade separation bridge and a 90 m-long subway to separate the movement of the finished goods from the production traffic in the plant. Careful planning with an emphasis on safety was needed to carry out the works as the main plant remained operational.
“Zutari’s appointment reflected our sound track record in the automotive industry, which has included the delivery of design and construction management services for automotive facilities in South Africa and abroad,” says Imraan Mahomed, Zutari Office Manager in KwaZulu-Natal. “The company’s technical expertise includes design, planning, and civil, structural and electrical engineering, as well as heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), and project management. Focusing on sustainable design, we also offer energy and water optimisation services for manufacturing facilities and retail outlets.”
