Bonega Communities Trust, South Africa

Identifying sustainable initiatives to develop mine communities.

Client

Ivanplats (Ivanhoe Mines South African subsidiary)

Project date

Appointed May 2018

As part of its new mining project in Mokopane, Limpopo, Ivanplats established the Bonega Communities Trust to drive corporate social investment and empower the 20 communities surrounding the mine. The trust was created to promote development through community-led initiatives, supported by dedicated funding.

The opportunity

To ensure effective allocation of funds, the trust needed to identify key community needs and develop a pipeline of impactful projects. Zutari was appointed to lead this process through an asset mapping exercise, aimed at uncovering sustainable, community-owned initiatives that could improve livelihoods and foster long-term development.

What we did

Zutari’s communication and stakeholder engagement team applied the asset-based community development (ABCD) approach to:

  • Community Engagement: Conducted focus group meetings and surveys to understand local needs and aspirations.

  • Asset Mapping: Identified existing community assets and potential projects that could benefit multiple villages.

  • Digital Data Capture: Used smartphone surveys and created a live, interactive dashboard with visual data insights.

  • Knowledge Database Creation: Developed comprehensive community databases containing valuable information for future planning.

  • Capacity Building: Empowered local champions to lead initiatives and supported grassroots planning for short- and long-term goals.

Zutari’s asset mapping and ABCD approach empowered communities to identify and lead their own development initiatives.

The outcome

The project overcame challenges such as community scepticism, language barriers, and political interference. Zutari built trust and fostered a mindset shift among community members, who are now actively engaged in shaping their own futures. The initiative also resulted in the creation of a rich knowledge base and a structured plan for sustainable development.

The Bonega Communities Trust project demonstrates how inclusive engagement and asset-based development can transform communities. Zutari’s approach not only delivered on the client’s brief but also laid the foundation for long-term, community-driven growth. The project was recognised internationally, winning the IAP2 Australasian Conference’s International Members-At-Large Award for Project of the Year in 2019.

“It was tremendously pleasing to see the mind shift that community members were able to make as a result of our engagement process.”
