Project date

2012-2016

The Kasane–Kazungula Villages Sanitation Project is a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at upgrading sanitation services in two rapidly growing villages in northern Botswana. The project responds to increasing demand for improved hygiene and wastewater management in the region, driven by population growth and tourism development.

The opportunity

Kasane and Kazungula are key gateway towns to the Chobe National Park and the Zambezi River, attracting both residents and visitors. However, the existing sanitation infrastructure was inadequate to meet current and future needs. The opportunity was to design and implement a sustainable sanitation solution that would protect public health, support tourism and preserve the local environment.

What we did

Zutari provided engineering and advisory services for the sanitation upgrade, including:

  • Design of wastewater collection and treatment systems

  • Planning of sewer networks and pump stations

  • Environmental impact assessments

  • Community engagement and stakeholder coordination

  • Integration of sustainable technologies and practices

The project was designed to be scalable and environmentally responsible, ensuring long-term benefits for the community.
Upgraded sanitation infrastructure supports health, tourism and environmental protection in Kasane and Kazungula.

The outcome

The sanitation project has significantly improved wastewater management in both villages. It has reduced pollution risks, enhanced living conditions and supported the region’s role as a tourism hub. The infrastructure is now better equipped to handle future growth and climate resilience.

The Kasane–Kazungula Villages Sanitation Project demonstrates how targeted infrastructure investment can transform communities. Zutari’s involvement ensured that the project was technically sound, environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive.

Sanitation infrastructure is essential for healthy communities and sustainable tourism.
