Port of Richards Bay

Expanding the throughput capacity of South Africa’s coal export harbour

In 2012, Zutari was appointed by Transnet SOC Ltd to provide design, assessment and engineering consulting services for the conceptual (FEL 2) study of the Port of Richards Bay’s transport capacity expansion programme.

The client’s goal was to expand its multi-purpose and the dry bulk terminals. Zutari was responsible for the full engineering design and option development of the project.

The study involved the evaluation of the current infrastructure and throughput capacity, a multi-criteria and risk assessment, the development of integrated solutions for the proposed demand forecast, the modelling of the throughput flow of the port for developed solutions and the costing of the solutions. During the study, the following engineering fields were assessed: bulk materials handling (BMH), port and coastal, rail, power transmission and distribution, water and wastewater, roads, structures, environmental advisory, risk, and health and safety. The scope of work also included reporting on and presenting the solutions for the FEL 2 gate review.

The tug requirements for vessel arrivals and departures were simulated with a numerical model to determine the number of tugs required for the future demand forecast

The Richards Bay tug harbour scope included an assessment of the current berthing facilities in respect to the tug requirements of the port. The tug requirements for vessel arrivals and departures were simulated with a numerical model to determine the number of tugs required for the future demand forecast. A new berthing concept layout, including a new jetty, was created for the estimated tug requirements, along with a high-level mooring and berthing design.
