Al Hudayriyat Elevated Cycle Track, United Arab Emirates

Concept to IFC design of elevated cycle track structures to accommodate new sports and leisure development on Al Hudayriyat Island.

Client

Calatrava / Modon

Project date

2023 to present

The redevelopment of Al Hudayriyat Island (West) includes the introduction of a major Sports and Leisure Precinct. As part of the detailed master plan, sections of the existing cycle track must be renovated and elevated to avoid conflicts with upcoming infrastructure and to integrate seamlessly with the future recreational environment.

The opportunity

The existing cycle track alignment required significant modification to ensure compatibility with the planned development. Elevating key sections of the track presented an opportunity to introduce architecturally expressive bridge structures that integrate with the island’s landscape while providing safe, uninterrupted routes for cyclists. The project required detailed structural analysis, geotechnical design input and multidisciplinary coordination from concept stage through to IFC.

What we did

Zutari was appointed to carry out the full scope of civil and structural engineering services, from concept design through to IFC. This included bridges, civil structures, utilities infrastructure, alignments and pavements, in addition to serving as Architect of Record.

Zutari analysed the elevated cycle track structures and developed the structural solutions for two primary bridge typologies:

Cable stayed bridges:

  • The bridge deck consists of fabricated steel edge beams inclined in the same plane as the cable stays.

  • A transverse deck is supported by prefabricated reinforced concrete panels topped with in situ reinforced concrete.

  • Cable stays support the deck at regular intervals and are anchored to V shaped pylon pairs, creating a visually striking structure.

Continuous steel bridges:

  • These bridges share a similar deck profile with the cable stayed structures but span more modest distances.

  • The deck is supported on steel columns with three arrangements:
    – V shaped
    – M shaped (providing transverse stability)
    – Inverted pyramid shaped (providing longitudinal stability)

Services Provided:

  • Concept to IFC design for civil structures and bridges

  • Utilities and infrastructure design

  • Alignment and pavement design

  • Geotechnical engineering

  • Architect of Record services

Axonometric views illustrate the continuous bridge typologies, showing deck construction and the various steel column arrangements that provide vertical and lateral stability.

The outcome

Zutari’s engineering design supports the transformation of Al Hudayriyat Island (West) into a major sports and leisure destination. The elevated cycle track integrates structural innovation with functional performance, ensuring seamless connectivity, visual harmony with the landscape and compatibility with future master plan developments.

The elevated cycle track forms a distinctive and functional element within the West Island transformation, demonstrating how multidisciplinary engineering can enhance both user experience and urban design quality.

Elevated cycle infrastructure designed to complement Al Hudayriyat’s evolving sports and leisure landscape.
