BPC Transmission Standards Development, Botswana

Standardising transmission network design to support national expansion and reduce costs.

Client

Botswana Power Corporation (BPC)

Project date

2016-2018

Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) is undertaking a series of transmission projects to expand the national power network. These developments are supported by technical consultants who bring expertise in power system design and specification, ensuring that appropriate standards are applied throughout the design, procurement and construction phases.

The opportunity

As BPC coordinates the expansion of its transmission network, the need for consistent and cost-effective design standards has become increasingly important. Although the baseline specifications for equipment were independently developed by consultants, BPC has launched a standardisation initiative to streamline future network designs and reduce overall costs.
The scope of the project focuses on primary systems and associated ancillaries required for transmitting power at voltages of 132 kV, 220 kV and 400 kV.

What we did

Zutari supported BPC in developing a comprehensive set of equipment and system design standards. These standards are intended to guide future transmission network expansions, ensuring consistency, reliability and cost-efficiency across the country’s growing infrastructure.

The project involved close collaboration with BPC and other stakeholders to align technical specifications with long-term operational goals. The standards cover key aspects of primary systems and provide a framework for future procurement and construction activities.
Standardised transmission infrastructure supports efficient national power distribution.

The outcome

The completion of this project marks a significant milestone in Botswana’s energy infrastructure development. The newly established standards will serve as a foundation for future transmission projects, enabling BPC to expand its network with greater consistency and reduced costs.

The BPC Transmission Standards Development project highlights the importance of strategic planning and technical collaboration in national infrastructure growth. With a robust framework now in place, BPC is well-positioned to deliver reliable power across Botswana for decades to come.

Standardisation is key to building a resilient and cost-effective transmission network for Botswana’s future.
