BPC transmission standards development

Development of extensive BPC transmission network

Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) has various transmission projects that are currently in execution to expand the transmission network throughout the country. The development of these projects was conducted with the assistance of various technical consultants, relying on their expertise in power system design and specification to ensure appropriate specifications and standards are implemented with the detailed design, procurement and construction of the new assets.

With the conclusion of the project, an extensive transmission network asset base will be created. Though being coordinated by BPC, the baseline specifications of the equipment have been independently determined by the consultants. BPC has embarked on a standardisation drive, with the objective of reducing overall costs and ensuring consistency in all future transmission network expansion designs. The scope of this project is limited to primary systems with ancillaries required to transmit power for voltages at 132 kV, 220 kV and 400 kV.

The primary objective of the transmission standards project is to develop a set of equipment standards and overarching system design standards which will streamline future network expansion designs on the BPC transmission system
