KPONG DAM

Assessing the long-term integrity and operational reliability of critical hydropower infrastructure at one of Ghana’s key energy assets.

Client

Volta River Authority (VRA), Ghana

Project date

January 2024 – September 2026

Located 24 km downstream of the Akosombo Dam on Ghana’s Volta River, Kpong Dam is a major hydropower facility comprising a 258 m-long concrete gravity spillway, 6.2 km of zoned earthfill dykes, and a 148 MW powerhouse commissioned in 1982. The dam’s spillway is equipped with fifteen radial gates and associated mechanical systems that have operated for more than four decades, playing a vital role in water management and power generation.

The opportunity

After more than 40 years of operation, the dam required a comprehensive assessment of key infrastructure components to ensure continued safety, reliability, and performance. Previous investigations had identified concrete swelling associated with alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR), while ageing mechanical systems and structural elements required further evaluation to support future maintenance and rehabilitation planning.

What we did

Zutari was appointed to undertake a detailed condition and integrity assessment of the Kpong Dam infrastructure.

Our team evaluated the structural condition of the fifteen radial spillway gates, assessed cracking and concrete swelling within the spillway gate piers, and inspected the dam’s broader concrete infrastructure, including the powerhouse. Building on earlier AAR investigations and long-term monitoring data, we analysed the effects of concrete degradation on critical structures and reviewed the performance of recently modernised control systems.

The assessment considered asset condition, operational reliability, safety requirements, and compliance with international dam engineering standards, providing the client with the information needed to support informed asset management decisions.
The assessment focused on both structural and mechanical infrastructure, helping extend the operational life of one of Ghana’s most important hydropower facilities.

The outcome

By identifying areas requiring intervention and evaluating the effects of long-term concrete degradation, Zutari helped strengthen the safety, reliability, and operational resilience of Kpong Dam. The project provides a solid foundation for future maintenance, rehabilitation, and asset management strategies, supporting the continued generation of renewable energy for Ghana.

Through a multidisciplinary assessment of structural, mechanical, and concrete infrastructure, Zutari supported the Volta River Authority in safeguarding a strategic national asset. The project demonstrates our expertise in dam safety, infrastructure integrity, and the sustainable management of complex hydropower facilities.
