AB InBev Sagamu Brewery, Nigeria

A large-scale brewery development in Sagamu, Nigeria, designed to meet growing demand and future expansion needs with resilient, sustainable engineering.

Client

AB InBev (formerly SABMiller)

Project date

2018-2020

Located in Sagamu, Ogun State, approximately 60 km north-east of Lagos, the AB InBev Sagamu Brewery is a major industrial facility designed to support the company’s expansion in Nigeria. Originally initiated by SABMiller, the project was scaled up following AB InBev’s acquisition, resulting in a revised capacity of 3.2 mega hectolitres.

The opportunity

The initial plan for a 1.8 mega hectolitre brewery was expanded to 3.2 mega hectolitres to meet increasing market demand. Zutari was appointed as the civil and structural engineers, tasked with designing a resilient and flexible facility that could accommodate future growth and complex operational requirements.

What we did

The brewery spans approximately 41,000 m² and includes key structures such as:

  • Packhall

  • Brewhouse

  • Engine room

  • Combined heat and power (CHP) system and boiler house

  • Full bottle store

  • Administration buildings

Structural steel was selected for its flexibility and ability to accommodate large clear spans, some exceeding 32 metres. Zutari designed the buildings using locally available 275 MPa steel grades and adapted to material availability during construction by revising structural elements as needed.

Value engineering played a central role. For example, additional columns in the packhall allowed trusses to connect directly to columns, eliminating the need for girders and reducing overall steel weight
The expansive Sagamu Brewery showcases industrial efficiency and structural innovation, tailored for scalability and sustainability.

The outcome

The project delivered a robust, cost-effective and adaptable facility that meets AB InBev’s operational and sustainability goals. The collaborative approach between Zutari, the architect, contractors and the client resulted in a brewery that is both economically efficient and environmentally responsible.

The AB InBev Sagamu Brewery stands as a model of industrial engineering excellence, demonstrating how strategic design and collaboration can deliver infrastructure that supports growth, sustainability and long-term value.

A structure that is economically efficient and met the requirements of the client for a resilient, sustainable design.
