Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP), Qatar

Engineering design for a world class science and technology innovation hub supporting Qatar’s National Vision 2030.

Client

Woods Bagot

Project date

2012 - 2016

The Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) forms a key part of Qatar’s National Vision 2030, which aims to drive sustainable development and establish Qatar as one of the world’s most advanced economies. The project brings together global technology enterprises and incubator start ups within a purpose designed innovation district.

The opportunity

QSTP represents a pioneering master plan concept for global science and technology parks. It was envisioned as a landmark environment that is contemporary and striking, while remaining respectful of Qatari culture and resilient enough to withstand harsh desert conditions.

The project created an opportunity to design a vibrant, people centred environment that supports collaboration, research and innovation. A core design aspiration was the separation of vehicular and pedestrian movement to create a safe and attractive public realm. A landscaped pedestrian podium links all major buildings beneath a signature veil shade structure, encouraging movement between the tenant buildings, activity hubs and the Incubator Centre’s retail and service offerings.

The master plan established QSTP not only as a world class research setting but also as a highly liveable green oasis featuring water, shade and human centred design.

What we did

Zutari provided multidisciplinary engineering services to realise Woods Bagot’s architectural vision. Services included structural, civil, façade, security and fire life safety design.

Key contributions included:

  • Structural solutions to support the innovative architectural forms and shading structures

  • Civil works design to integrate infrastructure with the pedestrian focused master plan

  • Façade engineering suited to extreme temperatures, sand, solar exposure and high wind loads

  • Security design aligned with the operational needs of a high profile research environment

  • Fire and life safety systems developed to meet international standards and the complexity of the interconnected podium and building network

These disciplines were integrated to support the iconic design intent while ensuring safety, durability and performance in Qatar’s demanding climate.
A contemporary innovation hub designed for people, blending technology, culture and climate responsive engineering.

The outcome

Completed in June 2016, QSTP successfully delivers a world class environment that supports scientific research, business growth and cross disciplinary collaboration. The project has become an internationally recognised landmark, reflecting Qatar’s ambition to lead in innovation while offering a welcoming, human scaled setting for its global community.

The combination of contemporary architecture, sustainable engineering and pedestrian focused design ensures QSTP remains a vibrant and functional space within Qatar’s dynamic development landscape.

A landmark innovation district that merges world class design with climate responsive engineering to realise Qatar’s vision for the future.
