Project date

2021

The eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality’s goal is to provide safe, affordable, and efficient transport. Zutari’s focus within this vision is to make transport smart, intuitive, human-centric, and intelligent. Upon completion, the R22-billion integrated transport system, known as Go!Durban, will serve more than 700 000 commuters each day. The first phase of the project was completed in March 2020.

The opportunity

The eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA) required a world-class intelligent transport system that would transform the way Durban moves. The aim was to design an integrated rapid public transport network that could operate efficiently for 16 hours a day, with buses arriving every five to ten minutes during peak times, and every ten to thirty minutes during off-peak hours.

What we did

Zutari was appointed by the ETA in 2012 to plan, design, specify, and oversee the implementation of all intelligent transport systems (ITS) for Go!Durban. This included:

  • Designing and overseeing the installation of fibre communications and security cameras along key routes.

  • Specifying and supervising the implementation of an integrated fare management (IFM) system, similar to Gautrain’s smart card ticketing model.

  • Developing a system to track buses in real time, ensuring contracting companies adhere to schedules.

These automated electronic systems improve the overall transport experience and can be applied to land-, air-, or water-based transport, integrating them for seamless travel.

Through Go!Durban, Zutari is proud to contribute to a modern, efficient, and people-centred transport network that enhances mobility, connects communities, and brings Durban closer to its vision of being Africa’s most liveable city.

“Zutari is honoured to help eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality become Africa’s most liveable city by implementing a world-class network of rail, road, and non-motorised transport systems.”
