Project date

2025-2026

Phase 2 of the MTN Innovation Centre in Fairland, Johannesburg, was designed to enhance high-technology development and consolidate MTN South Africa into a single, integrated site.

The opportunity

The expansion provided MTN with the opportunity to create a cutting-edge facility that could support its extensive electrical and data requirements, accommodate high client traffic, and maintain flexibility for future upgrades.

What we did

Zutari delivered structural, civil, and geotechnical engineering, alongside wet services and fire design. The building consists of two blocks connected by a central core with elevators and a partially suspended link bridge connecting Phases 1 and 2. Raised access flooring and suspended ceilings were installed to meet MTN’s data and electrical demands.

Project challenges included tight timeframes, with the concrete structure required to be completed within eight months. Phased handover of various areas was necessary to allow the end-user to begin fit-out and occupation promptly. External works also needed to be completed during the rainy season, while scope extensions were incorporated as the project progressed.
Phased access to the building allowed MTN to occupy areas quickly while construction continued elsewhere.

The outcome

The result is a multi-layered, high-tech, service-oriented building designed to accommodate high-volume client traffic. Its robust and flexible design supports future changes, energy efficiency, and participation in the green building challenge, a global collaboration project by the CSIR.

Phase 2 of the MTN Innovation Centre demonstrates how thoughtful engineering and design can create a sustainable, adaptable, and technologically advanced workplace that supports both current and future needs.
