Zutari provides infrastructure solution for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™
With its massive Y-shaped columns and clever use of concrete and glass, the Central Terminal Building (CTB) at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) is both striking and devoid of the heavy, boxed-in feeling that so many high-traffic airports have in common. The CTB not only forms the central link between the international and domestic terminals, but also links the multi-storey parking garage and new Gautrain station.
The completion of the new CTB was vital for the success of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, as the airport served as the gateway for the world traveller. Its completion set a new benchmark for design efficacy, functional flexibility and construction quality in that it was purposefully designed yet still manages to impress those who enter its doors with its breathtakingly clean lines and purposefully robust surfaces.
Zutari’s involvement in the project comprised the civil and structural engineering, including the implementation of a complex glass and aluminium façade system pivotal to the CTB’s visual appeal. Zutari also provided wet services and mechanical engineering, including heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC).
The terminal was constructed while minimising disruption of existing operations by careful sequencing and collaboration with the client and contractor.
Zutari has won numerous awards for this project, including:
*The Aurecon Africa business has been officially renamed Zutari as at 21 July 2020. Zutari acquired Aurecon Middle East on 20 November 2020.
