Rehabilitation of Hosea Kutako International Airport Runway, Namibia

Critical rehabilitation of Namibia’s only international airport.

Client

Namibia Airports Company

Project date

2008-2014

Hosea Kutako International Airport is Namibia’s only international airport, handling over 640,000 passengers and 14,000 aircraft movements annually. Zutari was appointed to investigate the cause of rapid runway deterioration and propose a solution that would ensure continued safe operations at the country’s busiest airport.

The opportunity

The airport’s main runway, measuring 4,532 metres, was showing signs of significant wear. High asphalt permeability, cracking of longitudinal construction joints, inadequate cross-fall and insufficient maintenance were identified as contributing factors. The challenge was to rehabilitate the runway without disrupting flight operations, while also preventing deterioration of secondary runways, taxiways and aprons.

What we did

Zutari conducted a detailed investigation and identified the root causes of the damage. Rehabilitation works included:

  • Improving the runway’s cross-fall to enhance drainage

  • Designing appropriate asphalt solutions where delamination had occurred

  • Replacing existing layers with a new asphalt overlay

  • Surfacing the runway with an Ultra-Thin Friction Course to improve drainage and impermeability

  • Ensuring compliance with stringent skid resistance requirements

Construction was carried out primarily at night to allow uninterrupted airport operations.

The outcome

The runway was successfully rehabilitated, extending its lifespan and improving safety. Additional remedial measures were implemented to protect other airport surfaces. Zutari’s technical expertise ensured minimal disruption and a high-quality outcome, safeguarding Namibia’s international connectivity.

The Hosea Kutako runway rehabilitation project highlights Zutari’s ability to deliver critical infrastructure solutions under pressure. Through innovative design and strategic execution, the airport continues to serve as Namibia’s gateway to the world.

Trusted for our deep technical skills, Zutari was appointed to both determine the cause and propose the solution for a rapidly deteriorating airport runway.
