Sohar Bank Headquarters, Oman

Façade and structural consultancy for a landmark double skin façade building designed by Gabriel and Santiago Calatrava.

Client

Atkins UAE / Calatrava

Project date

2020-2021

The Sohar Bank Headquarters, designed under the guidance of Gabriel and Santiago Calatrava, is an iconic structure for Oman’s capital. The building features a double skin façade draped over a “mobius” shaped tower. This mathematical geometry forms a complex 3D surface, allowing the outer façade to wrap seamlessly around the inner edge of the structure.

The opportunity

The architectural intent of the project was to create a harmonious working environment through a human centred design approach. The double skin façade forms a grand space connecting the interior to natural light and the surrounding landscape, enhancing the user experience.

Zutari was appointed to provide façade consultancy services across all project stages, beginning with pre contract services (detailed design, contract documentation and tender assessment) and continuing through post contract technical documentation review and construction supervision. The scope included parametric modelling of the complex façade geometry and assessment of the structural and geotechnical interface to ensure compatibility with the façade design.

What we did

Zutari’s façade engineering team delivered a comprehensive façade report focusing on the review of Contractor proposed connection details for the Link façade bridge system. This included examining the steel façade sub frame connections to the main structure.

The design review process included a detailed desktop study where the team:

  • Reviewed all relevant contract documents and correspondence.

  • Conducted a façade system study at the Link bridge, providing commentary on the design of connection details (rigid and flexible options) between the steel frame and the façade sub frame.

  • Reviewed technical arguments against statutory requirements, international standards and industry best practice.

  • Assessed the structural behaviour of the façade system through parametric modelling.

Using generic algorithms, Zutari developed Mashrabiya screens of varying densities to filter daylight in an adaptive manner. This optimised material specification and reduced cooling loads for the building.

Services Provided:

  • Independent structural third party review

  • Façade engineering

  • Steel temporary works design

  • Geotechnical interface review

The double skin façade wraps around the mobius shaped tower, creating an iconic architectural presence supported by advanced parametric and façade engineering.

The outcome

Zutari’s façade and structural review services ensured the design met the architectural ambition while maintaining performance, safety and compliance with international standards. The optimised Mashrabiya shading system improved energy efficiency and contributed to a more sustainable building envelope.

The Sohar Bank Headquarters demonstrates the successful integration of complex geometry, innovative façade design and advanced engineering expertise, resulting in a landmark structure for Oman’s capital.

A visually striking double skin façade supported by rigorous structural and parametric design review.
