The University of Botswana Academic Hospital, now known as the Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital (SKMTH), is a landmark medical facility in Gaborone. Initially named Botswana University Hospital, it was renamed in 2018 in honour of Botswana’s second president. The hospital plays a vital role in clinical training for medical students and sets a benchmark for academic excellence and healthcare innovation in the region.

The opportunity

The development of a 450-bed, 89,000 m² teaching hospital required robust structural engineering to support a complex mix of functions, including patient care, research, and education. Zutari was contracted by the lead consultant to provide structural design documentation for this high-profile project.

What we did

Zutari’s scope included:

  • Structural design documentation for the entire hospital facility

  • Coordination with the lead consultant and other disciplines

  • Integration of structural solutions to support offices, laboratories, and clinical spaces


The hospital’s design supports both healthcare delivery and academic research, with facilities tailored to the needs of students, educators, and medical professionals.
